Introduction and Basic Information
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is variously known as acne
inversa or Verneuil disease. It is a chronic and inflammatory skin disease that
scientists have not been able to find permanent cure for as of the time of
writing and publishing this text. The chronic skin condition can be painful and
debilitating to sufferers. What causes hidradenitis suppurativa are not quite
known as of now. However, there are some risk factors that can aggravate or exacerbate
HS to flare up. I will also discuss these risk factors later in this volume.
What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
Acne inversa or HS is a deep-seated skin disorder which
usually occurs as a result of the plugging or blocking of the hair follicles or
apocrine glands. When hair follicles are plugged, it inflames the apocrine
sweat glands and the result is the formation of single or clusters of lesions
and abscesses in the apocrine bearing regions of the body of a sufferer. The
areas of the body where HS are noticeable include axillae, groin, buttocks,
armpits, under the breasts, perineum, perianal, perineal, perigenital, nape of
the neck and scalp, etc. These are parts of the body where there are hair
follicles and apocrine glands.
When the abscesses rupture and drain, sinus tracts may form
in the affected sites. And most of the time it causes scarring and may hamper
the easy movement of the affected part of the body. HS disease comes like bumps,
ingrown hairs, pimples, cysts, blackheads, folliculitis, cellulitis, boils,
lesions, abscesses, just name it, and with severe pains depending on the
sufferer or patient and the stage of the disease.
Early diagnosis of this skin condition is very important so
that it doesn’t get worse before you start managing or curing it. HS can be
diagnosed by physical examination and characteristic history of a patient and
it is mainly by clinical diagnosis. Although acne inversa is more severe in
men, it is three times more common in women than men. Also, it is common with
people in the second and third decades of life. But you have to be sure that
your HS disease is not misdiagnosed as is always to case with lots of patients.
The truth is that HS limits the kinds of activities you can
do as a sufferer. For HS sufferers, it is really a physical, emotional and
social burden to live with the debilitating, disabling and humiliating chronic
skin condition.
